MyOMSYSTEM picture description and tags
This is the Irish subspecies which actually has a red/brown head in comparison to its UK cousins. Velvet Ants, of course, are not ants at all. They are wingless wasps (females are wingless, males have wings). Some species are known for their very painful sting.
