This is a beautiful, powerful image of a bathing Great White Pelican and a perfect winner for 'moving'. Caught at the perfect moment, wings raised showing the underwing and upperwing at full stretch with only the tips of the wings out of focus, enhances the feeling of movement. The image oozes energy, enhanced by thousands of miniature lit water droplets set against an appealing black backdrop. The all important eye contact is there, the beady black eye staring straight at the viewer, whilst the image is pin-sharp where it needs to be around the head. The orange of the enormous bill coupled with the green from the water adds a very pleasing colour palette. The photographer has achieved a minimal depth of field so the bird pops from the screen, neutralising any background distractions whilst freeze framing the action with a perfect shutter speed for the situation. A worthy January winner.
The theme for this month's competition on MyOlympus is "Moving". Whether it is the subtle motion of the waves suggested in this beautifully lit image by MyOlympus member Tomy61 in the header or something more dynamic by judge and OM Ambassador, Rebecca Nason - the choice is yours.
