I got that, at least in my dark area without structures that attract them, I have more chances using 1/2 sec, F/11-13 and ISO 1000-1600. With this settings, low-power lightnings are nearly missed, high-power lightnings are over-exposed, and just average-power lightnings are fine

    I usually focus on the hills into the foreground, because the mountains are too far away; and I got that lightnings should be about 10 Km away; if too nearby or too far away the chances to shoot them decrease
