I met Rongomai for the first time on a recent trip home, to New Zealand. It took me three days to get the courage to ask to take his portrait. He agreed. We had fun. I processed and showed him this image and he liked it, a lot. He died in his sleep that night. He was so alive, and then he wasn't.
