Es una libélula de tamaño pequeño-mediano, con una longitud de entre 38 a 40 mm., su periodo de vuelo es de mayo a octubre. Los machos destacan por el color rojo intenso, esto hace que sean fácilmente identificables. Las hembras poseen un color ocre amarillento, con tonos verdosos.
