Purpurreiher sind seltene Brutvögel in Deutschland. Jährlich gibt es nur wenige Brutpaare, vor allem im Süden, und selten kann man sie auch als Durchzügler beobachten. Purpurreiher ähneln Graureihern am ehesten, sind jedoch kleiner, weniger kontrastreich und brauner gefärbt.
