Der Kiebitz ist etwa taubengroß (28 bis 32 cm). Durch den Kontrast zwischen schwarzer Oberseite mit grünlich schimmerndem Metallglanz und weißer Unterseite mit schwarzem Brustband sowie eine abstehende Federholle am Hinterkopf ist die Spezies unverkennbar.
