Bereits 1852 wurde die Teufelsmauer "als ein Gegenstand der Volkssage und eine als seltene Naturmerkwürdigkeit berühmte Felsgruppe" unter Schutz gestellt. 1935 erfolgte die Ausweisung der Teufelsmauer als ein Naturschutzgebiet durch Verordnung des Regierungspräsidenten in Magdeburg.
