Mystery fly on thistle at Tophill Low NR

MyOMSYSTEM picture description and tags
Possibly a Druid Fly (Clusiidae) but not sure. It was a good Marco day for insects following the heavy rain and the warmth brought out all the wildlife. This fly spent a long time circling the thistle head and spinning a silken web around it. We thought at first it was egg-laying.

  • The mystery is now solved! I managed to photograph a fruit fly Xyphosia miliaria. They frequent the thistles and lay eggs in the bud which then forms a gall. I will revisit next week and see if it has developed.
