It has been asked many times before and especially by people who will be planning to visit Amsterdam for a short stay: what are your favorite hotspots and must visits? At this moment we gathered our Amsterdam hotspots, varying from a little doughnut shop to the best museum in town. Read along to find out!
P.S.: as you probably know Amsterdam is full of canals and water, so tip number one is to rent a bike for some hours and experience the city like the people living in Amsterdam do. Public transport isn’t the best way to travel from A to B, in Amsterdam we do this by bike – even when it’s raining.
#2 order breakfast/lunch and start the day with the best coffee in town
Then to start the day we’d like to visit the area called “De Pijp”. This area has become much nicer in the last few years, is less touristic and you’ll find the cute little stores here. Besides the stores and restaurants it’s famous for it’s Albert Cuyp Market, where you can find literally everything if you’re up for a great search. Our favorite spot to eat and tip number two is definitely “De Wasserette”. This little lunch-spot is on the corner and serves two things: the best coffee in town (according to us) and great sandwiches. It only opens during the day and you’ll have to fight (kidding!) to get yourself a seat. Order inside and sit in the sun while watching local Amsterdam walk by.
#3 explore conceptstores
In Amsterdam there are a few places to find cute little concept stores. One is definitely the famous Nine Streets (de negen straatjes), which are actually nine streets next to each other. Yet, these streets are very touristic and therefore none of our Amsterdam friends wants to visit these on a weekend day. This store is called Anna+Nina and they opened their first store (got two nowadays + an online shop) in “De Pijp” area. Literally everything you see here, you’d like to bring home. From lingerie to earrings and pillows to decorate your apartment. Tip number three is visiting one of the stores or go nuts online.
#4 spoil yourself with a new perfume
This store comes close to a grown-up candy store: Skins. They display all the best perfumes, skincare products etc. every girl would love to have. The funny thing is that most women would not only like to use these products, but also would buy them because it would look good on your bathroom shelf. With multiple stores opened (also on the Nine Streets) this is the store we’d like to visit and is based at The Conservatorium Hotel (nice hotel if the budget suits you). Tip number four is to experience the vibe of this store and just to buy a handcream if the prices not really suit your budget for the day ;-).
#5 visit one of the museums
Amsterdam is famous for a lot of things and one of them is definitely the many museums. Our favorite museum just re-opened a few years ago after being closed for over ten years. One of the most famous paintings “De Nachtwacht” from Rembrandt is being exhibited at Rijksmuseum and our Tip number five. If you don’t have time to visit a museum, please just travel via Museumplein by bike to see it from the outside. Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk museum and Van Gogh museum are located next to each other and connected via Museumplein, just minutes away from the shopping area.
#6 drink like we do
Although we’ve said before the Nine Streets isn’t our favorite spot to visit during the weekends, this restaurant which is located at one of these streets, is surely one of our favorites during the week or at night during the weekends. You can find us here almost every week, we gather with friends and eat/drink before heading in town. Tip number six is Libertine cafe, either visit for a lunch between shopping or drink some cocktails and lovely dinner at night.
#7 fill your sugar
We all like to eat donuts, don’t we? One of our best friends opened her own little doughnut/donut store called Harewood Bakery - there is a great chance to find us here during the weekends and most definitely Tip number seven. All donuts are freshly made in the morning and she’s always exploring new flavours to surprise her guests every time they enter her little shop.
Thank you StyleofTwo for your lovely guest post introducing your city Amsterdam!
