I love climbing big, gnarly mountain routes to shoot the drama and then ski down trying my best not to miss the last cablecar of the day.
I specialise in the cold and remote assignments that no-one else wants. Often operating independently in extreme conditions.
My photography has been published with Wanderlust Travel Magazine, Renovate, Mountain Equipment, British Mountaineering Council, UK Climbing, Austrian Alpine Club, Creative Live and the Alpine Club.
I've shot in some spectacular places like the Nepalese Himalayas, Siberian tundra and Bornean jungle all on my trusty EM5 MKII.
In 2018 I collected my first award from Wanderlust Travel Magazine for their Active Travel Photographer Of The Year with my image of two rookie mountaineers caught in a storm on the Cairngorm Plateau in Scotland. I have since won several further awards, notably with my mountaineering imagery.
I shoot exclusively with Olympus kit, mainly using the OM-D E-M5 Mk II (upgrade coming). My portfolio is online at alexmetcalfephotography.com, and you can follow my work on Instagram. I keep a weekly a blog too featuring much of my photography.
Alongside my work in photography I'm a freelance writer and filmmaker, taking a particular interest in shooting documentary style photo stories of mountain peoples I meet on my travels and expeditions.
When I'm not dangling from a rope or shooting from the hip you may find me down at the local rock club with my band. We do requests, but no Sex on Fire.
