The World Oceans Day 2019

Gender and Ocean – how are these two connected? Not at all – you might think. Quite much, however, is the answer. Gender and Ocean is this year’s topic for the World Oceans Day. Celebrate this day with us, find out more about why the world’s oceans are so impressive and
take part in a fantastic raffle.

Each year on the 8th of June, people all over the world celebrate the ocean and try their best to change its story. In doing so, they celebrate each and every life on this wonderful planet. Because no matter where you are and no matter how far you might be situated from any coastline, you are somehow connected to the ocean.

Why?

The oceans are the lifeblood of our planet and the source of all life. Not only do they hold over 95% of the planet’s water, they produce more than half of the oxygen in our atmosphere, are said to be important for 50% of the breaths we take and absorb a lot of carbon. But there’s more to it.

In many ways, the ocean acts as a regulator of our climate. By soaking up the heat and transporting water of different temperatures all over the planet, it regulates the weather, the temperatures as well as rains and droughts in many places and it makes most parts habitable by keeping the balance. And speaking about habitation – the ocean does not only help to make our planet such a great home to us, it is also a home to the greatest abundance of life including some of the smallest and some of the biggest creatures there are. From critter to whales – there is a variety of life in the oceans that is hard to imagine from ashore and that we can only do our best to partly capture with our lenses.

Gender and Ocean - The oceans also provide us with food. That goes hand in hand with the fact that they create many jobs – not only for fishermen. From tourism and transport to water sports businesses: many industries and jobs are highly connected to and dependent on the ocean – and its condition. And it goes without saying that a (commercial) world – and our supermarkets – are quite hard to imagine without ocean freight.

Marcin Dobas – Exciting encounter with steller sea lions

For many divers, underwater encounters with marine mammals are an unforgettable experience. Whenever I meet a dolphin, a seal or an eared seal (Otariidae), I am sure that I have just met an incredibly intelligent creature which enjoys our encounter as much as I do.
The goal of my last photographic diving expedition was the coat of Kamchatka coast. To some of you, this idea may seem absurd. Everyone who starts diving dreams about the warm waters of the South Seas, the sun, the coral reefs and orange clownfish playing in the water.
The water around the peninsula of Kamchatka, however, is cold, the visibility is not good and the biodiversity is limited. So – why go there? […]

Juan José Sáez Méndez - The great white shark

On my second trip to Guadeloupe I wanted to capture the behaviour of the great white shark in my pictures. With the help of my results as well as the information provided by the scientists who work with these animals, I wanted to explain or rather express the importance that these special animals have in the ecosystem and show what is being done to protect them.

The great white shark is an alpha predator that is at the top of the food chain and that, in theory, should not be at risk because it has barely any natural predators. Unfortunately, the great white shark is still on the red list of the worldwide endangered species due to direct or accidental catches in fishing nets, the constant pollution of the seas and the warming or narrowing of their natural habitat. This makes us humans their main predator. […]

Karin Brussard  - Dolphins – my experience after waiting for 20 years!

 Karin Brussard • OM-D E-M1 MarkII • M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm F2.0

In the 20 years that I’ve been diving, I’ve taken a lot of photos; from seahorses measuring a mere centimetre to swimming elephants. But I’ve never encountered a dolphin. Until now.For this mission, we chose to search in a large area in the Bahamas which is home to around twenty dolphins. Everyone on the boat was on the lookout. As the hours passed, my hopes began to fade once again. There wasn’t a single dolphin fin to be seen across the wide expanse of water. My attention wandered after just two seconds, I gave up and went to do something else. […]

  • My most awesome underwater encounter was when my daughter and son took the PADI underwater course and we did a high five. I could finally start scuba diving with them. I would love to win to capture the memories under water.
  • My best experience was snorkeling at the Galapagos Islands with turtles
  • That day in the Mediterranean the dive had not really started but following an octopus in shallow water was really magical. While gliding elegantly over sand it had a grey colour that changed into green hovering over seaweed. We followed it for over 20 minutes and saw it change multiple times. Beautiful.
  • My wife and I joined a group that jumped off the back of a catamaran to drift snorkel. Oh how I wish I had been able to photograph the stunning fish and turtles all around us. My most memorable moment though at that moment was seeing the happiness in my wife’s face!
  • Kruger National Park , a lioness who was calling for her pride as she had become separated from them . We were in an open top Jeep and she was only 10 feet away from us . Thank goodness she didn’t like foreign food !!!
  • I live far away from the ocean, but I love sea and I like to go there every time I have the opportunity to do so. First time I saw the ocean i was around 30 year old on a business trip near of Bilbao, norther part of Spain, during winter. An evening, after a hard working day, I want to relax a bit and I took my car to go to see San Sebastian that is not far from there. I reached it in the evening and no one was around, I tough due to low temperature and heavy winds. I stopped my car away from the shore and started walking. While I was reaching the shore I begin to hear a dark sound, a vibration, that made my whole body rumble, and then I saw them: big, huge waves that was crashing against the riff and the shore. I was only able to stay, looking the ocean that showed me all of his power, his force and his beauty. The picture of those waves, sever meters high, the sound of the crushing, so loud and proud, the feeling of be little, fragile and only a "little man" in front of the Ocean, the one with capital letter, will remain in my hearth forever. I'm looking forward to see this marvel again!
  • I was diving in the Red Sea, on the Saudi Arabian coast near Jeddah. Only a few meters down, I stood on a shelf to adjust my watch. The water was the clearest I have ever seen and I could see two reef rays in the distance. They slowly flew up to me and so gracefully passed me brushing me on either side. I was utterly captivated and stood in amazement for a good while as they eventually faded into the warmth of the reef shallows.
  • Eine Tolle Kammera mit der mann super Fotos machen kann Hatte sie zum Testen
  • Ma première expérience sous marine, filmer des tortues en Martinique du côté d’Anse Noire Très beau souvenir
  • I wanted to win the bottom, but I realized that I could never succeed. And then I let myself be conquered by the deep, whatever it is. The sea is of such a magnitude that it inspires man. This is why man is attracted to it. For centuries many people have come down here to look for answers that they would have hardly found in surfaces. I go there to put my mind in order, when I need silence to listen to my inner voice. In the same way as Georghios Haggi Statti, sponge fisherman from Kárpathos (Greece) of the early 20th century. Bare, without the use of a wetsuit, mask or fins. With just the 'skandalopetra', a stone used as ballast to reach the bottom. For a few seconds I become fluid, they are moments of eternity. I cancel me and re-join me in the same moment.
  • One of my greatest impression was diving with my kids and visited by Dolphins... Theit are in the beginning very afraid but to curious and lost fear - wow.
  • My most impressive underwater experience was a snorkling trip in Tenerife in February 2016. I saw huge sea turtles and was able to swim together with them. I also took some pictures with my Olympus mju Tough 8010. It would be time to upgrade it, but I’m saving money to upgrade my Olympus E-M5 Mk II first.
  • Beautiful World off color & strange species full of wonder oar the only place to be I love to spend time there
  • Celebrating World Ocean Day on beautiful Bonaire where I also experienced my most impressive underwater encounter(s) so far - several years ago, it was here I met my first Manta ray as well as last year, when I finally was at the right spot at the right time - diving along with dolphins.
  • Just yesterday, we have finished our dive, climb back to the zodiac, I try to pull an anchor up, but it stuck. We tried to pull it for few minutes without result. I had to go back. When I was at the bottom it occurred that the anchor got trapped in rocks. When I tried to move it I have noticed a shadow, something was behind me. First I thought it was our zodiac, but when I turned around I saw three dolphins behind me. I freezed, dolphins were approaching me, they came hand distance very curious of what I was doing. I don’t have to write more, this was most magical experience in my life, I have never seen dolphins underwater befor. I’m diving at this site almost everyday for last year and a half hoping to see them. I finally did. To bad that I have left my camera in zodiac... Joy
