The World Oceans Day 2020

Innovation for a sustainable Ocean: Topic of the year
If you’re a diver, snorkeler or just love being at the beach we invite you to comment on your experiences
and share your thoughts on this emotive issue for your chance to win one of the three fabulous prizes on offer.

See the thoughts of Thomas Van Puymbroeck below, one of our ambitious underwater photography visionaries, who is very passionate about this subject.

Conservation versus consumption… that’s the question

Worldwide our oceans and their inhabitants are currently under enormous pressure. Human population is growing and so is our need for food.
Historically only 100 years ago there were plenty of fish in our oceans, but now it’s getting critical for some species. For example: each year 100 million sharks are hunted and killed, mostly for their fins. If we want a sustainable ocean full of fish, we need those sharks because everything is linked together in the food chain of life. If you skim from the top of the food pyramid - the sharks - everything below will simply collapse.
But there is hope: more and more people are starting to realize the benefits of a healthy ocean: numerous approved sanctuaries are growing to preserve nature’s delicate equilibrium.

If you protect a certain area of the ocean through a sanctuary it allows the fish to thrive, breed and explore the wider ocean, often returning to the safety of the sanctuary to breed again. Only after allowing a couple of generations to breed uninterrupted should we be allowed to fish again, otherwise we run the risk of overfishing with the very real danger of whole species becoming extinc.

This is what is happening now in certain sanctuaries with the shark population. Having protected a section of reef the whole eco system is getting a second chance, with smaller fish returning and attracting even smaller macro life. Once this begins it can expand to other reefs and underwater life will start to thrive again. This all stems from the observation of sharks at the top of the food chain.

With the ecological systems all being interlinked, by protecting the oceans we humans benefit alongside the sub marine life. Former fishermen change professions to become wildlife protectors defending the seas against poachers and ensuring divers and tourists understand the rules of the ocean and gain maximum enjoyment from the waters they explore.

Now that the success of these sanctuaries is growing, divers and underwater photographers are willing to pay large fees for access to visit the ever increasingly beautiful wildlife. It is therefore vitally important that we ensure the funds continue to be used to regenerate the great conservation work being undertaken. This way everybody wins, from the local communities to the amazing underwater world that we enjoy as divers or just from admiring the fabulous photography we can appreciate here.

By supporting the conservation work in the sanctuaries this way I am sure that our ocean eco system will thrive and we can sustain the fishing industry too.

  • Most memorable water experience; being swilled around by currents while swimming in the emerald green River Aar, Bern. Quickly exhausted from what was described in the guide book as 'a lovely summer swim' I found myself being swept toward an embankment and folded around a submerged tree trunk. I lost my swimming shorts and shoes to the force of the water, which pinned me to the rough bark and threatened to tangle me in branches should I try to move back in to the flow of the water. My pride too, also lost, on arrival of the police and fire service. Before a crowd of onlookers, I was instructed to very simply find the ledge and climb out. I did, bare naked and shivering, and branded as a foolish tourist. Had I been in possession of a waterproof shockproof camera, I might have some evidence of this, but I'm rather glad I don't.
  • Capturing memories with my Olympus E-M10III is so fun and creative ! Can't wait doing the same underwater with OT-6
  • Fotografiar debajo del agua es una experiencia inolvidable, ya que reflejamos un mundo que no estamos acostumbrados, yo repetiría y más con una TG-6!!
  • 2010: I've been in Haiti with a German NGO after the terrible earthquake. On a free weekend we had the chance to drive to the beach and to snorkel in this beautiful ocean.
  • Encounters with hammerhead sharks at Cocos. Unforgettable moments captured with TG-5.
  • Ive had a few 'tough' Olympus cameras, I have many great memories and photos from using them, my original was the mju720sw had great fun surfing with it and taking lovely snorkelling photos in Pembrokeshire (sadly lost by my sister at a beach. quite a few years back since,) ,my next one went for an unintended swim in Loch Leven when canoeing so is probably over 80m down had lovely sailing photos on it. - Ive now got a new Olympus tough camera TG5
  • Best memory using my TG was in Fiji, on Mantaray Island. On holiday from Denmark, meeting up with my cousin who is at the moment sailing around the world HeartCamera with flash
  • Great campaign. Taking a macro-shot during a night-dive of a beautiful yellow anemone with my E-M10ii and filming an octopus huntig bate was a great experience. Now my 16 year-old daughter has started diving, too. The TG-6 would be a perfect present for her.
  • I love the underwater world, but by snorkeling almost on the surface I have achieved great satisfaction. Especially with the macro program. I just have to wait and life approaches TG and she never disappoints.
  • In 2007 I got an Olimpus M725SW and a underwater box for it. Iron (literally) and faithful companion for underwater photos. I still use it. The adventures with him are many, but mostly in southern seas than ours Bulgarian. It is a little difficult to take pictures under the water of our sea. One of my most exciting experiences is free diving (without aqualung) to a rock near Sithonia, Greece. That was the first time I was there. On one side of the rock it is 10 meters deep, on the other it becomes over 30 m. deep. And a meeting with scuba divers underwater. The photo is taken with the previously mentioned M725SW.
  • My magic moment with my OMD EM1 and Olympus housing when I drifted into a school of blue barracudas into the deep - breathtaking and unforgettable and beautiful images as well!
  • Jorge I love the underwater world, but by snorkeling almost on the surface I have achieved great satisfaction. Especially with the macro program. I just have to wait and life approaches TG and she never disappoints.
